Flower of the Month

January's Flower of The Month is Carnation

The Carnation is one of  the oldest cultivated flowers. They date back more than 2,000 years and  are rich with symbolism and mythology. Some believe that the carnation got it's name from the word “corone” meaning flower garland. Others think it comes from the word “coronation” because of its use in Greek ceremonial crowns, while still others say it’s derived from from the Latin “carnis” (flesh) or  “incarnacyon” (incarnation),  referring to the flower’s original pinkish color and the incarnation of God-made flesh.

Today, carnations can be found in a variety of natural and genetically altered colors. They represent steadfastness, love, fascination and distinction, but some colors have thier own unique meanings.
White......Pure Love and Good Luck
Light shades of Red........Admiration
Bright Red......Steadfastness
Dark Red......Deep Love and Affection.
Purple......... Capriciousness
Pink........Mother's Love
This symbolism began in Christian mythology with the belief that the pink carnation first appeared on earth from the Virgin Mary’s tears falling along the trek to Calvary with Jesus. Wherever her tears fell pink carnations sprouted to remind all of a mother's undying love. That's why pink carnations  are given on Mother’s Day.
This fragrant flower is also the state flower of Ohio, the January birth flower, and the 1st wedding anniversary flower.

At A&J's Floral Boutique(R)  single carnations ar 85 cents. Budvases begin at $6.95. and a beautiful dozen that are hand-tied or designed in a vase are $30.
